Redcar & Cleveland Borough CouncilTransforming the way highway gullies are managed within Redcar & Cleveland Borough Council using the InTouch SmartWater Solution.

Background:

Carillion Plc manage the gully cleansing contract for Redcar & Cleveland Borough Council (RCBC). There are 34,000 gullies across the borough, that were historically all cleaned annually. This was a considerable operation which was completed by 2 gully wagons.

The Challenge:

When visiting the gullies over the course of 2 years to complete the cleaning it was identified that a significant number did not require annual visits and a small number required more frequent cleaning. RCBC and Carillion Plc were looking for a way to manage the efficient and timely cleansing of their gullies.

SmartWater Solution:

The InTouch SmartWater solution provides a risk managed cleansing schedule comprising of:

Reasons for success:

Redcar and Cleveland Borough is now serviced by a single gully wagon. Key gullies and flood risk areas are cleaned more frequently and flooding risks have reduced.  Savings made since the implementation of SmartWater systems have been re-invested in the network.

Next Steps:

The InTouch SmartWater solution includes the use of various data sources, including multi-purpose sensors placed inside gullies to measure silt levels, water levels and other key data.

This data is analysed, with other data feeds, using the automated modelling software and is output as files which highlight risk areas.  These files, when viewed through the InTouch SmartWater Solution software act as an early warning system for gully flooding.
