Yes, all UK business radios require an Ofcom licence. Without one, you are breaking the law. If you are using low powered unlicenced private radios, you do not need a licence, however you may experience poor range and performance.

Generally an Ofcom licence costs £105 p/year, which includes our admin fee for managing all areas of your licence.

It is an offence under Section 8 of the Wireless Telegraphy Act 2006 to establish, install or use wireless telegraphy stations or apparatus without a valid licence. On conviction, the maximum penalties for an offence under that section are two years’ imprisonment and an unlimited fine.

It can take up to 6 weeks for Ofcom to process any licence application.

Most of our businesses have a technically assigned licence. A technically assigned licence is where Ofcom allocate frequencies to you which are not usually shared with anyone else, thus reducing the possibility of any interference. Some businesses may fall under Simple UK Light or Simple Site Light, which cover local on-site communications. You will need an Area Defined licence if you are looking to cover a wide area.
